MLB umpire draws criticism, laughter for bizarre call during Brewers-Rays game

Bucknor's errant out call reversed on Bauers in Brewers win

Umpire C.B. Bucknor called Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers out at first base after a fielder's choice play during the sixth inning of Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Bucknor ruled that Bauers failed to touch the bag before being tagged on a wide throw from second baseman Ben Zobrist. Replay review overturned the call, confirming Bauers reached the base safely.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth at American Family Field in Milwaukee, with Bauers facing Rays reliever Cole Sulser. Bucknor stood a few feet from the play. Bauers returned to first smiling, as did Brewers manager Pat Murphy; Rays manager Kevin Cash smirked.

Bauers finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, including a solo home run off Yoendrys Gomez in the eighth inning. MLB umpire draws criticism, laughter for bizarre call during Brewers-Rays game Catcher Gary Sánchez hit a solo homer in the sixth. Milwaukee won 6-2, improving to 4-1; Tampa Bay fell to 2-3.
