Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green attends U.S. flag football national team trials

Darrell Green, who played cornerback for the Washington Redskins from 1983 to 2002 after being selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, qualified for the U.S. men's flag football national team trials through a digital combine.[1][2]

The 64-year-old Hall of Famer, inducted in 2008, is participating in the trials in Chula Vista, California, with hopes of an invitation to training camp and a potential roster spot on the 2026 U.S. team for the world championships in Germany.[1][3]

"He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive," USA Football senior director of high performance and national teams Callie Brownson said. "Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look."[1][3]

Green played his entire 20-year NFL career with Washington, winning Super Bowls XXII and XXVI, earning seven Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro honors, and recording 54 interceptions including six returned for touchdowns.[2][4]

The Washington Commanders retired Green's No. 28 jersey on October 20, 2024, during halftime of a game against the Carolina Panthers in Landover, Maryland.[5]

  • NFL career highlights:
  • 54 interceptions (tied for 8th all-time at retirement)
  • Seven Pro Bowls (1984, 1986-1991)
  • Two Super Bowl champions
  • Pro Football Hall of Fame (2008)

Flag football will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after being added by the International Olympic Committee.[6]

The U.S. men's flag football team has won six of the last seven world championships since 2010.[1]

About 100 men and women athletes, including former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State guard O'Mariah Gordon, are vying for national team attention.[1]
