Cleveland Browns propose extending NFL future draft pick trades to five years

The Cleveland Browns have proposed a rule change that would allow NFL teams to trade draft picks up to five years in advance, extending the current limit of four years.[1]

NFL owners approved the current four-year limit on March 20, 2024, via Resolution FC-5, up from the previous three-year restriction.[2][3]

The Browns' proposal, which aims to foster a more active trade market and increase roster flexibility, will be considered alongside a Pittsburgh Steelers suggestion on player contact rules during the free agency negotiating window.[1]

Owners meetings, where proposals are reviewed, are set before the end of March.[1] The NFL competition committee is scheduled to unveil its rule change recommendations next week.[1]

Troy Vincent, the league's executive vice president of football operations, stated at last month's scouting combine that no submitted proposals this year address the "tush push" play, which was debated during the previous offseason.[1][4]

Approval of any rule change requires a three-quarters supermajority vote, or support from at least 24 of 32 teams.[2]

For comparison, the NBA permits teams to trade draft picks up to seven years into the future, a rule adopted in 2018.[5]
