Bettis backs McCarthy to succeed Tomlin in Pittsburgh

Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis has endorsed Mike McCarthy as the right choice to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers, calling the veteran head coach "championship-caliber" following his appointment as the franchise's first new head coach since 2007. McCarthy takes over from Mike Tomlin, who stepped down after 19 seasons - a tenure defined by a Super Bowl title and an unbroken streak without a losing record.

"I think he's definitely a fundamentals-type coach. He's won a championship, so he's a championship-caliber head coach. He knows what success looks like," Bettis told Fox News Digital. "We're excited that he's starting the next chapter of the Steelers organization in terms of a leadership perspective. I think there's a lot of excitement for what he brings to the table."

McCarthy arrives in Pittsburgh carrying his own championship credential. He was head coach of the Green Bay Packers when they defeated the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV, with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. The dynamic now comes full circle: Rodgers is the Steelers' starting quarterback, reuniting him with McCarthy in Pittsburgh. Bettis acknowledged the weight of replacing Tomlin, describing his predecessor's run as "a hell of a run in terms of the timetable," while adding that the longevity of the tenure made a transition plausible even if the timing was not widely anticipated. "It was surprising in that no one expected it," Bettis said.

Bettis, nicknamed "The Bus," spent the final decade of his 13-season NFL career in Pittsburgh. He rushed for 13,662 yards and 91 touchdowns, contributed three rushing touchdowns during the Steelers' Super Bowl XL playoff run, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. McCarthy's ability to manage an experienced roster around Rodgers and meet the standard Tomlin established will be the defining measure of his early tenure in Pittsburgh.
